Awakened Light, Celestial Guardians Book 2 by J.J. Nite
(Young Adult Fantasy/Romance)
All Edie Malakim wanted was to be a regular teenager, but she never had an abundance of luck. Discovering you’re the answer to an ancient prophecy, the one destined to lock Lucifer in Hell, definitely doesn’t qualify as normal either.
As Edie struggles to control her fire-throwing power and not burn everything in her path, she must also be ready for danger appearing around every corner. With the help of Kiah, a fellow Timoreo, and her coyote friend Atlas, she begins to learn a measure of control and a little more of her history.
When an unexpected visitor appears, Edie’s world becomes even more complicated as secrets are revealed and old wounds are opened. As her eighteenth birthday and the possibility of new abilities being bestowed on her approaches, Edie must try to decipher fact from fiction and friend from foe.
J.J. Nite was nice enough to answer a few of my questions!
- Why did you become an author?
I’ve always had stories in my head, but I never had the confidence to write them down. Then, when my youngest was one, I started writing my first book. At first, it was because I needed to remember I was a person separate from just being a mom. I discovered that creating stories was something I loved and haven’t stopped since.
- What is your favorite part of being a writer? (ie. plotting, editing, networking, creating and destroying lives)
My favorite part of being an author is creating a story that I hope all of my readers will love as much as I do.
- What is your least favorite part of being a writer?
Editing!!!! I know it is necessary, but it is so boring when you compare it to the crafting of a story.
- If you could be any character in a book, who would you be?
I would be Edie from my new series. She is feisty but lacks a little confidence when it comes to making friends. And as a bonus, she can throw fire from her hands.
- Do you have any quirks that you’d be willing to share with us?
I’m not sure if it’s a quirk, but when I’m writing I have a specific playlist for each book. Something that reflects the different elements and emotions I’m including as well as something that doesn’t distract me too much.
Excerpt from Awakened Light
I walked through the halls of school, and nothing felt like it had before. I wished I could go back and do things differently. You know, little things like appreciating my mom and making sure she knew it before she died or paying more attention to the things she was trying to teach me while I was growing up. And then there was the big stuff. Those events you wish you could block out of your mind, but once they happened, they were cemented in your memory for all time.
That’s how I felt anyway—even if everyone else around me thought it was awesome I had been able to send a demon back to Hell all by myself. Granted I had been able to save my own life and Kiah’s, but it bothered me to do it. And because I was the answer to an age-old prophecy that said I was the chosen one to lock Lucifer back to Hell, there was a little added pressure. Not really how I wanted my senior year of high school to go.
I had been avoiding going back to school for fear someone might find out what I could do or what I really was. Even though it had only been two days, it felt like much longer. All I wanted was to be a normal teenager and to be lost in the sea of faces. My destiny, however, was something altogether different.
